As disability or incapacity consultants, we are exposed to many individuals with physical and mental conditions, which impede their quality of life. In most cases, it is often an accumulation of factors that lead to an individual being plagued by illness.
We live in a world where we have access to a wealth of health-related knowledge and all the latest health trends; however, the number of both mental health illnesses and chronic diseases are on the rise. We seem to have lost touch with the fundamentals of health and wellbeing.
Fast foods and financial stress
In today’s fast-paced, world where sedentary lifestyles are becoming increasingly common, access to fast food is at our fingertips, and where financial stress is the norm, it is important to return to the building blocks of health. Laying a good foundation for health is imperative for our wellbeing.
-
Nutrition
Consuming a balanced diet rich in whole foods such as fresh fruits, vegetables and unprocessed meats is key. Limit processed foods and refined sugar. A nutritious diet supports our immune system and reduces the risk of chronic diseases.
-
Hydration
Aim to drink 2 litres of water per day for optimal cellular functioning- adding a pinch of salt to your water can assist with water absorption.
-
Sleep
Adequate sleep allows our bodies and minds to rest, repair and recharge. Be consistent with a sleep routine that works for you. Limit food intake, artificial light and caffeinated drinks before bedtime for a restorative night’s rest.
-
Movement
Find a form of movement that suits you- it can be walking, swimming, or weightlifting. Daily movement improves our mood and cognitive function and is essential for combating the negative effects of a sedentary lifestyle.
-
Sunlight
Sunlight plays an essential role in regulating our circadian rhythm, which sets us up for the day ahead. Stepping out into nature is a bonus that can increase one’s experience of joy and calmness.
-
Social connection
Building and maintaining healthy relationships is essential for our happiness and sense of belonging. Research supports that feeling connected to others contributes to longevity.
-
Stress management
Chronic stress is well-known for causing inflammation, which contributes to various health conditions. To cultivate resilience, it is important to find an accessible method of stress regulation that you can incorporate into your daily.
-
Presence
There is power in the Now. Present-moment awareness (also known as mindfulness) can reduce negative feelings about the past or future, which can evoke a sense of inner peace and freedom. Gratitude can be used as a gateway to the present moment.
-
Balance
We should consciously evaluate which areas of our lives need more attention. Establish a good work/life balance by cultivate time for rest, play and creativity.
-
Purpose
The Japanese term “Ikigai” refers to something that gives your life value, meaning or a sense of fulfilment. Discovering your ikigai, setting goals and pursuing your passion is one of the secrets to a long and happy life.
Health is wealth
Achieving a state of wellbeing requires a conscious effort to nurture the different areas of our lives and cultivate certain habits and behaviours.
Prioritising and taking control of one’s mental and physical health with a focus on prevention will assist individuals in thriving personally and contributing positively to the world. In the working world, this could in turn reduce the rates of disability, incapacity and absenteeism and have a positive effect on profitability and the economic growth of our country.
As Wellness Coach Joyce Sunada once said:
If you do not make time for your wellness, you will be forced to make time for your illness.
