If you have ever attended a work retreat, you have likely taken leadership style quizzes. These tools provide insights into engaging with colleagues. They also enhance self-awareness. However, they fail to capture challenges faced by C-suite executives in the digital age.

Executives must understand their leadership approach. They must also align it with their organisational context. For CFOs, the stakes are especially high.

CFOs in the digital age: challenges

South Africa’s private sector has struggled with external challenges. These include loadshedding, political instability and infrastructure collapse. However, signs of improvement have emerged. Recently, the Government of National Unity reached its 100-day milestone. During this time, the Rand appreciated by 5.8% against the US Dollar. Despite this progress, challenges remain.

Our CFO decision-making survey reveals a concerning trend. About 67% of CFOs report feeling overwhelmed by the volume of decisions. South Africa is now at a turning point. Decision paralysis is not an option.

Navigating uncertainty can be daunting for any executive. However, the best leaders recognise that rewards lie beyond fear.

Integrating a digital core across all operations

To meet evolving organisational demands, CFOs must lead Total Enterprise Reinvention. This approach integrates a strong digital core across all operations. It enables organisations to adapt continuously to technological changes. It also sets new strategic imperatives for improved performance.

Throughout this transformation, CFOs in the digital age must manage financial risks. This ensures organisations remain future-proof.

Research indicates that success depends on CFOs adapting to change. They must also lay the groundwork for decisive leadership. We highlight three key variables for decision-making. These include CFO leadership style, strategic imperative and company culture.

Leadership styles of CFOs in the digital age

Each factor plays a critical role in success. However, transformation starts at a personal level. Leadership style influences organisational success more than strategy or culture.

Our research identifies four leadership types. These include Financial Engineers, Problem Solvers, Collaboration Creators, and Change Agents. Financial Engineers account for 32% of CFOs. They excel at analysing financial data. However, they may struggle with strategic vision. To succeed, they must develop empathy and communication skills.

Problem Solvers also make up 32% of CFOs. They focus on resolving immediate challenges. However, they must prioritise long-term strategy and teamwork. Collaboration Creators excel at building strong teams. However, they must make timely decisions.

Change Agents drive transformation. However, they need stakeholder support to prevent overwhelming their teams.

Strategic imperatives for CFOs

Each leadership style brings strengths and weaknesses. Leaders must balance these attributes to navigate diverse cultures. Ideally, organisations should have a mix of leadership styles.

South Africa’s risk landscape complicates decision-making. Experts describe it as a polycrisis. This situation requires a combination of Problem Solvers and Change Agents. These leaders balance long-term strategy with immediate solutions.

CFOs must align their leadership styles with strategic imperatives. These include continuous improvement, acceleration and growth, disruptive change, and burning platform crises. Continuous improvement remains the most common imperative.

About 52% of CFOs operate under this approach. It involves refining processes and aligning them with long-term goals. Leaders in this category must balance short-term results with future innovation. They must also allocate resources strategically to ensure success.

About 28% of CFOs focus on acceleration and growth. This imperative requires flexibility and a proactive mindset. These CFOs drive expansion by identifying growth drivers. They collaborate with the C-suite to address challenges. Meanwhile, disruptive change affects 17% of CFOs. This figure is expected to rise. Industry disruptions have increased by 200% over the last five years. CFOs in this category must view change as an opportunity. They must stay ahead of market trends and promote agility within their teams.

Burning platform crises affect only 3% of CFOs globally. However, these crises occur more frequently in South Africa. Economic volatility and uncertainty contribute to this trend. CFOs facing such crises must act quickly. They must prioritise urgent challenges and communicate decisions clearly. This situation demands swift, precise action to implement complex solutions effectively.

CFOs and organisational culture

CFOs operate within distinct organisational cultures. They must adapt their leadership approach accordingly. Consensus-driven cultures require stakeholder buy-in. Leaders must ensure transparency while balancing collective decision-making with agility.

Growth-oriented cultures demand resilience and bold decision-making. CFOs must create environments that embrace innovation. Big Bet-focused cultures prioritise high-impact initiatives. Leaders must remain adaptable to disruptions.

In top-down cultures, CFOs must articulate decision rationales. They must also address knowledge gaps within their teams.

The role of digital transformation in CFO leadership

Regardless of leadership style, CFOs must prioritise digital transformation. A strong digital core enhances efficiency. It also fosters resilience, enabling organisations to adapt to disruptions. The most effective CFOs balance short-term tactical responses with long-term vision. They leverage digital solutions to drive Total Enterprise Reinvention.

South Africa’s economic volatility and regulatory challenges shape the business landscape. CFOs play a critical role in ensuring sustainable growth. By adapting their leadership styles, they can guide their organisations through uncertainty. They also inspire stakeholder confidence and pave the way for future success.
