Global disruptions have resulted in manufacturers needing to pivot to meet the needs of the new digital consumer. But given the worldwide semiconductor chip shortages, challenges in distributing automotive parts, and other supply chain issues, many manufacturers have struggled to make the transition.

The cause of this can be attributed to not optimally using the data at their disposal. This is where connected intelligence will play a key role in transforming manufacturing in this connected landscape.

Not only is the amount of data being generated today at a scale previously unimagined, but it is coming from a plethora of channels. Digital customers are demanding more customised products resulting in smaller product batches, frequent changes, and more waste. Connected intelligence harnesses the potential of next-generation analytics and artificial intelligence (AI) to provide insights into suppliers, customers, connected machines, and network partners.

With connected intelligence as a building block, a manufacturer can evolve from reactively responding to demand to use proactive predictability and stay ahead of the curve. This will result in a connected manufacturing environment where data is gathered for decision-makers who use it to predict events and automate processes.

But without visibility into processes and operations, a manufacturer will be unable to improve them. Further complicating this is the fact that acting on insights is not enough to create meaningful change. A manufacturer must know where and how to act to best improve and optimise its operations. This is where analytics and manufacturing intelligence come into play.
