The local business news cycle has taken a dark and repetitive turn. Week after week, headlines are dominated by a relentless spike in organisations falling victim to sophisticated hacks, data breaches, and crippling ransomware attacks. From local municipalities to major political parties like the ANC, no sector seems immune.

More recently, the anxiety has peaked with widespread speculation that one of South Africa’s largest and most technologically sophisticated banking groups has suffered a compromise.

This isn’t just a streak of bad luck – it is a worrying pattern driven by a new frontier of threat intelligence – specifically, the weaponisation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and hyper-realistic “Deep Fakes.”

This reality begs an uncomfortable question – if a premier banking institution with multi-million-rand cybersecurity budgets can be breached, what chance does the ordinary business stand?

The short answer doesn’t lie in purchasing expensive, complex software. It lies in the fundamentals – systems and processes.
