In my formative years in the 1990s and 2000s, the picture of a successful career was well-defined: a corner office, a tailored suit, a big house and, of course, a fast red sportscar in the garage.

Ask anyone in that era how they became so successful, and the response was invariably a variation on good grades at school, a degree from a reputable university, and hard work. Common sense at the time suggested that if you follow this simple formula, success will inevitably follow.

For many Millennials such as myself, that is precisely what we did. Colleagues in the corporate world all recount similar tales of how they prepared for a successful entry into the world of work. But why are so many of my peers unsure of their future? Why is it so hard for them to picture where they will be in ten, twenty years from now?
