As South Africans we tend to adopt trends that are harmful in the long run. For a while now we have heard people preach and celebrate the notion of ‘Black Excellence’ without being fully aware of the damage this term causes.
Black people are the majority in our country, yes, we have been previously disadvantaged especially in business and career development but in my opinion that is still not reason enough for us to use the term ‘Black Excellence’.
The phrase ‘Black Excellence’ suggests that black is and has never been excellent and that we should always been shocked when we encounter the success of black people in this country. There is nothing wrong with being loud and celebrating one’s achievements, but we need to be thoughtful and do it in such a way that it is inspiring to the next generation. The term also brings…
