When it comes to building the future of energy in Africa, the decisions facing the continent’s leaders today are nothing less than of historical importance. More than anything else, energy systems are the very fabric of business and society.

Oil and gas companies looking to establish winning positions in the decarbonisation transition and beyond cannot achieve that goal by themselves. They will need the help of their customers, particularly those that are heavily dependent on hydrocarbons, and adjacent sectors, and be part of developing the cross-sectoral actions.

In Elon Musk's words, "…if we expand the scope and scale of consciousness, then we are better able to understand what questions to ask". In all predictions of what technology will bring us in 2021 and beyond, one must ask the right questions and not just focus on the shiny new things.

Almost any stock with a decent hydrogen angle performed well in 2020. So, what is all the excitement about, and are these stocks in a bubble? Renewable energy can and will decarbonise power generation. Renewable energy and batteries can and will decarbonise the automotive sector.

According to the latest Employment Outlook Survey, South African employers report limited hiring intentions for the second quarter of 2020. While 8% of employers forecast an increase in payrolls, 5% anticipate a decrease and 85% expect to make no changes. Once the data is adjusted to allow for seasonal variation, the overall outlook for South Africa stands at +2%, unchanged from the previous quarter.

In what seemed like the blink of an eye, Mozambique’s known natural gas reserves spiked from nearly nothing to over 165 tcf, placing it as the continent’s third biggest reserve holder. It has been almost exactly ten years since Anadarko drilled the well that would give Mozambique its first major gas find in over sixty years of mostly disappointing oil and gas exploration.

Minister of Energy, Jeff Radebe, purportedly granted a welcome deviation from South Africa’s existing power generation licensing regulations that should see a relaxation of the process, encouraging additional power supply into the local grid. The change comes amidst growing concern over an already-strained national power supply and its ability to tolerate the increased winter load.
