By Dr Andrew Huberman

Protocols offers a practical guide to improving mental and physical wellbeing through simple, science-based practices. Rather than presenting health as a collection of complicated interventions, Huberman focuses on everyday behaviours that readers can understand and apply.

The book explores how small, consistent changes can influence sleep, focus, stress, exercise, nutrition and overall performance.

Practical science for everyday life

What makes Protocols particularly accessible is its emphasis on practical application. Huberman explains the science behind each protocol before showing readers how to incorporate it into daily routines.

For example, his sleep protocol encourages exposure to sunlight soon after waking. His stress protocol recommends a specific breathing pattern that can be performed quickly. These approaches demonstrate how simple actions can support broader health goals.

Protocols organises Huberman’s protocols across seven key areas:

  • Sleep
  • Exercise
  • Stress control
  • Nutrition
  • Light
  • Focus, motivation and learning
  • Personal growth

Importantly, Huberman does not present these protocols as rigid prescriptions. Instead, he explains how readers can customise them according to their circumstances and goals. This flexibility makes the book relevant to people seeking improvements in everyday health, productivity or performance.

The book also draws on decades of neuroscience research, including Huberman’s own work and insights from experts featured through his Huberman Lab platform. Consequently, Protocols connects scientific research with practical guidance without requiring readers to have specialist knowledge. Its clear writing style further helps translate complex ideas about brain function, neural plasticity and bodily health into accessible practices.
