About the author
Zapiro is Jonathan Shapiro. He was born in 1958. He went through school in Cape Town. He studied architecture at UCT. He also experienced conscription, activism, and detention. Later, he received a Fulbright Scholarship to New York. After that, he established himself as South Africa’s best-known cartoonist. He is the editorial cartoonist for Daily Maverick.
He has published work in Mail & Guardian, Sowetan, Sunday Times, Independent Newspapers, and The Times. As an activist in the 1980s, he worked for the UDF and for South Africa between 1987 and 1988. He has published 26 best-selling annuals and four special collections. He has won numerous international and South African awards. He also holds two honorary doctorates.
