South African retail giant Checkers is revolutionising the shopping experience with the introduction of their innovative smart trolleys. The new Xpress Trolley system, launched in August 2025, represents a significant leap forward in retail technology, combining convenience with cutting-edge functionality.
How Checkers smart trolleys work
The Xpress Trolley features an integrated touchscreen that allows shoppers to scan items as they move through the store. Customers begin their journey by scanning their Xtra Savings card, then simply scan each product’s barcode before placing it in their trolley.
The smart system maintains a running total of purchases while displaying detailed product information and personalized promotions in real-time. This transparent approach helps shoppers manage their budgets more effectively while shopping.
Key features and benefits

- In-store navigation assistance
- Integrated payment system
- Queue-free checkout experience
- Personalized promotional offers
Pilot program implementation
The initial rollout includes 20 smart trolleys distributed across two Western Cape locations – Checkers Hyper Brackenfell and Checkers Constantia. Each store received 10 trolleys as part of this pioneering initiative.
Technology and innovation
Developed by ShopriteX, the group’s innovation team, these smart trolleys integrate seamlessly with existing Checkers Sixty60 profiles. This integration enables customers to use saved payment details, making transactions swift and secure.
The sophisticated system includes basket editing functionality, allowing customers to modify their selections easily. Upon completion, shoppers can exit through dedicated checkout gates where they receive printed receipts.
Future of retail shopping
The implementation of Checkers smart trolleys signifies a broader shift toward digitalized retail experiences. This technology not only enhances customer convenience but also improves operational efficiency, particularly for Sixty60’s in-store picking operations.
As the pilot program progresses, Checkers will gather valuable insights to refine and potentially expand this innovative shopping solution across more locations.
