More than 30% of South African adventure travellers spend under R500 per person per day. Yet, they demand high-value experiences. This is according to our new traveller insights.

The study is the most comprehensive analysis of South Africa’s domestic adventure tourism market to date. It surveyed over 4,200 respondents in partnership with Wesgro through the 101 Adventures Western Cape Competition.

The new traveller insights challenge traditional assumptions about adventure tourism pricing. They reveal a market that prioritises memorable experiences over big spending. This research fundamentally shifts our understanding of South Africa’s adventure traveller.

We are seeing a market that values experience over expense. This has clear implications for how operators should position and price their offerings.

New traveller insights

The data reveals three equally compelling travel motivators: adventure (20.3%), relaxation (21.2%) and family time (21.1%). This highlights the multi-dimensional nature of domestic travel decision-making. It also suggests that operators should consider hybrid experiences that meet multiple consumer needs.

Self-catering accommodation is the clear preference among respondents. It is followed by bed-and-breakfasts and resorts, reinforcing the importance of flexible, affordable lodging options. The most sought-after activities include boat cruises, hot air ballooning, hiking, zip-lining and helicopter rides. These preferences showcase consumers’ desire for variety and scenic experiences.

Higher-budget travellers showed distinct preferences. They lean towards wildlife safaris, wine tours and whale watching. Premium segments also gravitate towards wellness, cultural and once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

Across all demographics and spending levels, value for money emerged as the top concern. Practical amenities, such as complimentary Wi-Fi and proximity to natural environments, also ranked highly.

Time to rethink product and pricing strategies

For industry stakeholders such as marketers, regional planners and operators, the new traveller insights offer a clear direction. The focus must be on affordability without sacrificing quality. Develop flexible packages that suit families and solo adventurers alike. Prioritise authentic local experiences that deliver real value.

Understanding our domestic market has never been more critical. This research enables our members to make informed decisions about product development, pricing strategies and market positioning. It’s the kind of evidence-based insight that drives sustainable industry growth.

The study is part of our broader commitment to data-driven industry support and strategic market intelligence. A complementary supply-side report is also in development with adventure operators. It will quantify sector size and performance metrics. Together, these insights will offer a comprehensive view of market dynamics from both consumer and operator perspectives.

Looking forward

The research comes at a crucial time for South Africa’s tourism industry. Operators are seeking to understand and capitalise on evolving domestic travel patterns in the post-pandemic landscape.

Globally, adventure tourism is one of the fastest-growing segments within the travel industry. This represents a significant opportunity for economic recovery and inclusive growth across South Africa’s regions.

These findings support our mission to strengthen adventure tourism’s strategic position within South Africa’s broader tourism offering. They aim to drive inclusive growth, promote regional distribution and enhance authentic local experiences.

Finally, the study reinforces the critical role of industry associations. They provide market intelligence that enables informed business decisions and strategic planning across the tourism value chain.
