The world has changed immensely since on-premise infrastructure was considered the best option for company applications. Today, most companies have begun shifting toward off-premise options, such as cloud and co-location.

Determining the true market value of a home is about more than design, amenities, kerb appeal, location and size. While those are of course important elements of home valuations, they only paint half the picture for buyers and sellers looking to enter into property transactions.

Way back, there was a joint course that combined students from the Computer Science (CS) department, which, at the time, was very focused on algorithms and programming skills, with students from the Business Information Systems (BIS) department – a more commercially oriented and less technical group.

The realisation came when I least expected it. We had been out of South Africa for five years when we met my parents, siblings and their families for a family holiday. Our children by then had gained New York accents and were stylishly attired in their overpriced fashion items, whilst the nieces and nephews marauded through the hotel in their 'Naartjie' outfits that were more akin to pajamas than to fashion.

The effective management of application capital is what will propel the next Amazon, Google, Microsoft, or Netflix. Not how many physical assets they deploy in their infrastructure, warehouses, or showrooms; nor even how many employees they amass. The real competitive differentiator will be found in their applications.

The Internet offers massive potential for knowledge-sharing, education, entertainment and human interaction. However, the Internet also has a potential for danger, including ransomware and malware as well as other risky activity such as piracy, illegal gambling and pornography.

When Tim Berners-Lee declared data to be the “new raw material of the 21st century” back in 2011, he was perfectly describing the direction many economies were heading in - from industry to insights and intelligence. But in the six years since, data has defied the economic principles that many commodities adhere to: unlike other raw materials, the more plentiful the data the more valuable it becomes. It is coveted like precious metals and valued accordingly for its power to drive the insights that help transform businesses.
