Following a challenging 2023, South Africa’s manufacturing sector must prioritise digital transformation, cost reduction and reskilling to drive growth. South Africa boasts a well-developed manufacturing sector. In 2023, the sector in its entirety provided more than 1.6 million jobs and accounted for 13.0% of South Africa’s gross domestic product (GDP).

The pace of technology change keeps accelerating, not just in the manufacturing sector, but across industry sectors globally. Machines are faster, more powerful and more sophisticated than ever, and this trend shows no signs of easing off. However, for many reasons, South African industrial equipment and machinery (IM&E) manufacturers have been slow to adopt some of the latest technology, relying instead on old models. In doing so, they run the risk of falling behind their regional and global counterparts.

Amidst the disruptive changes brought on by industry 4.0, the past two years has seen the world being faced with the worst global pandemic in just over a century - plunging both individuals and organisations into a state of chaos, uncertainty and instability whilst radically reshaping life as we knew it.

However, industrialisation challenges in recent decades and the relatively slow adoption of new technologies have hampered the true potential of this industry.

There are many buzzwords that define the era of digital and transformation. From industrial digital transformation (IX) to Industry 4.0, these terms describe the emergent technologies and platforms that allow for organisations across sectors such as transport, logistics, and manufacturing, to refine operational excellence and business process optimisation in increasingly tight economic times.
