Why one-size-fits-all is the real education challenge

For years, the conversation around educational equity in South Africa has focused heavily on the physical digital divide. Examples include tablets distributed to schools, fibre rolled out to townships and zero-rated data allocations.

These initiatives remain important and commendable. However, the conversation must move beyond infrastructure and focus on something even more critical: context.

The context gap exists in the mind of the child. It represents a far more insidious divide and a significant barrier to learning. As a result, even when two children look at the same screen, they do not receive the same education.

True educational equity extends beyond providing every child with a device. Instead, it requires content that reflects who children are, where they live and how they experience the world. This is the real education challenge facing South Africa today.

The hidden bias in standardisation

Consider a standard comprehension test delivered through a sophisticated digital learning platform. The text describes a family taking a weekend trip and navigating an urban subway system.

For a child in an affluent suburb, these terms provide familiar entry points. The child reads, comprehends and answers the questions based on reading ability. However, place the same digital test in front of a child in rural Limpopo or a deep-rural community in the Eastern Cape. That child encounters words such as “subway” and scenarios disconnected from daily life. Suddenly, the test no longer measures reading comprehension or critical thinking. Instead, it measures cultural exposure.

When an assessment measures familiarity with a specific socioeconomic lifestyle rather than cognitive ability, it penalises a lack of privilege. Consequently, it fails to evaluate intelligence accurately.

A rigid, one-size-fits-all standardised curriculum assumes a baseline of shared lived experiences. In a country as diverse and socioeconomically divided as South Africa, that assumption does not hold true. Furthermore, when a child fails a test because of unfamiliar vocabulary, confidence suffers. In such cases, educators are not testing the child’s capacity to understand. This reality highlights the real education challenge behind many learning outcomes.

Translating lived experiences

To bridge this gap, EdTech must evolve. More importantly, it must move beyond literal language translation and embrace the translation of lived experiences. Translating an unfamiliar concept from English into Tshivenda or isiZulu does not solve the problem. If the concept remains abstract, the learner still struggles to relate to it.

Fortunately, educational technology offers a powerful advantage. Unlike static resources, digital platforms can adapt dynamically. A textbook cannot change its examples according to the reader. A smart digital platform, however, can.

If educators teach mathematical probability through word problems, they do not need examples involving stock portfolios or ski lifts. Instead, they can use local markets, farming yields or communal transport systems. The underlying cognitive skill remains the same. Only the contextual wrapper changes.

By localising terminology and scenarios, educators dismantle the cultural gatekeeping embedded within traditional education. They also allow children to bring their full identities into the learning process. As a result, learners see their own worlds reflected in their education while building essential skills. Addressing this disconnect lies at the heart of the real education challenge.

Localised and engaged

We believe engagement creates the bridge to mastery. We also believe context drives engagement. This is why gamification can become a transformative tool for educational equity when rooted in local realities.

Gamified learning should not rely solely on abstract science-fiction avatars or Western-centric tropes. Instead, it should create digital environments that feel familiar, relevant and celebratory to African children.

When learners interact with characters who resemble them, hear references from their communities and solve challenges based on local realities, engagement increases dramatically. Consequently, the learning environment feels safe and welcoming rather than foreign and intimidating.

Learners also avoid wasting mental energy trying to understand unfamiliar concepts before attempting the actual question. For example, they no longer need to work out what a “subway” is before answering a comprehension task. Digital learning platforms can also adapt content dynamically to meet a child’s contextual baseline. This capability unlocks unprecedented levels of personalised education. As a result, technology becomes an equaliser rather than a magnifier of existing disparities.

Beyond the device

If South Africa truly wants to unlock the potential of millions of bright young minds, success metrics must evolve.

We must stop counting devices delivered. Instead, we must assess the relevance and effectiveness of the content delivered through those devices. Ultimately, the real education challenge of our time is not an infrastructure crisis. It is a context crisis.

By intentionally designing EdTech that reflects the diverse realities of our children, we can create a genuinely equitable education system. Only then can technology fulfil its promise as a driver of inclusion, opportunity and meaningful learning.
