Leadership Lessons from the African Wild and Beyond

By Letlhokwa George Mpedi

For the author, a journey through South Africa’s Kruger National Park shifted from a simple game drive to a profound masterclass in leadership. As he observed the intricate dynamics of animal behaviour, he began to trace parallels between the natural order and human systems of power.

From Predator to Prey becomes a guiding theme in this transformation, showing how nature’s codes can reshape leadership thinking.

The unwritten rule of law that governs the wild

Drawing from a distinctly African approach to leadership that emphasises community and interdependence, From Predator to Prey explores the unwritten rule of law that governs the wild. The book then extends these lessons to human contexts. The silent cooperation of lionesses on a hunt reveals the value of shared purpose.

The matriarchal guidance of elephants demonstrates stability through wisdom. Even the territorial instincts of wild dogs offer important insights. With these examples, the book provides a vivid and thought-provoking perspective on how nature’s instincts can inform leadership dynamics.

As Letlhokwa tracks and interprets the strategies of various species, he challenges leadership models built solely on top-down control. Through this detailed observation, he encourages readers to rethink traditional leadership paradigms. Instead of rigid hierarchies, he presents a model grounded in the tenets of ubuntu leadership. From Predator to Prey ultimately argues for leadership rooted in nature’s enduring logic.
