My fight to build and save Education Africa

By James Urdang

This book is a journey of triumph and setback. It tells the story of building something good in a world that doesn’t always welcome it. It explores the roles of allies and adversaries, as well as the impact of mentors and obstacles.

Above all, the story centres on social justice. It shows how education holds the power to change lives. It also highlights the resilience needed to protect that power when it faces its greatest threats.

A story of hope and resilience

A fascinating South African memoir offers a powerful narrative of hope and resilience. It Always Seems Impossible includes a glowing foreword from The Nelson Mandela Foundation. This immediately sets the tone for a journey filled with challenges, victories and learning.

At school, James Urdang caused trouble and underachieved. Diagnosed early with ADHD and dyslexia, he faced low expectations. Despite this, he went on to found Education Africa. This organisation has educated thousands of young black South Africans.

Walter Sisulu mentored James. Nelson Mandela entrusted him. Helen Suzman and Dr. Aggrey Klaaste, the former Editor-in-Chief of The Sowetan, also supported him. In fact, Dr. Klaaste became the organisation’s first chairman in 1992. With determination and boldness, James turned his dream into reality.

Then, everything changed. One day, he faced a devastating challenge. Executives from a global financial institution attempted a hostile takeover of Education Africa. He fought a gruelling battle to save the organisation. Throughout this ordeal, he clung to the belief that “It Always Seems Impossible” moments can be overcome. He relied on resilience and courage to push through.

A powerful account from a genuine African hero. Inspiring, urgent and true.
