When selecting electrical products for industrial, commercial or domestic use, one crucial factor often gets overlooked. It is how well these products can withstand environmental elements like dust and water.

This is exactly where Ingress Protection (IP) ratings come in. The importance of IP ratings cannot be overstated; however, despite their critical function, many users of electrical equipment do not fully understand what IP ratings actually mean.

What are IP ratings and how do they work?

An IP rating is a globally recognised standard. It indicates the level of protection that an electrical enclosure provides against the intrusion of solid objects and liquids. This rating is displayed using two digits.

For example, in IP68, the first digit (from 0 to 6) reflects the level of protection against solid particles such as dust. The second digit (from 0 to 9) reflects the level of protection against water. A higher number in each position signals a higher level of protection.

Understanding IP ratings is essential for maintaining the safety and longevity of electrical equipment. This is especially true in demanding industrial environments. By selecting the appropriate IP rating, users ensure that equipment can operate safely within its intended conditions. It prevents damage or failure caused by dust or water ingress.

IP goes well beyond industry norms. For example, all our IP-rated products, including cable glands and junction boxes, undergo rigorous third-party testing. These products are also tested continuously in our advanced in-house laboratory. This dual testing approach ensures that the products not only meet standards but frequently exceed them.

Another example is our junction boxes and cable glands, which are often certified with a dual IP66/68 rating. This rating means they are completely dust-tight (IP6X). They also resist powerful water jets (IPX6) and withstand continuous submersion in water up to 2 metres deep (IPX8).

The IP-rated cable glands and junction boxes are specifically engineered for extreme environments. Their compression glands for unarmoured cable, as well as their Ex e and Ex d glands for armoured and unarmoured cable, are designed to deliver dependable performance in settings where failure is simply not an option.

In addition to performance, IP ratings also focus on longevity. Rubber sealing components can degrade over time. This degradation may reduce their effectiveness. The goal is to ensure maximum durability over the product’s life cycle.

Replacement gaskets for junction boxes and cable glands also allow customers to maintain a strong seal without replacing the entire unit. It extends the product’s lifespan and offers a cost-effective solution for long-term reliability.

Choosing the correct IP-rated product is vital. It supports both safety and uninterrupted operation, especially in environments where dust and moisture exposure cannot be avoided.
