About the author
Padraig O’Malley is a scholar, author, and mediator. He wrote Biting at the Grave, which was one of the New York Times Editors’ Choice Best Books of 1990. He has written extensively about the conflict in Northern Ireland. For more than thirty years, he has facilitated meetings that opened paths to negotiation and peace.
In 1989, he began the Heart of Hope project (www.omalley.co.za). Through this initiative, he conducted over two thousand hours of interviews. These interviews chronicle South Africa’s journey from apartheid to democracy.
O’Malley currently holds the John Joseph Moakley Professorship for International Peace and Reconciliation at the McCormack Graduate School of Policy and Global Studies at the University of Massachusetts, Boston. He is also the founding editor of the New England Journal of Public Policy. Additionally, he serves as a visiting professor of political studies at the University of the Western Cape in South Africa.
