Have I Got GNUs For You is the 29th annual collection from South Africa’s legendary cartoonist Zapiro.
Every one of his incisive annuals has been a best-seller and this one will be no exception as it captures yet another white-knuckle ride of a year for South Africa and the world. With his eagle eye, his sharp pen and his biting humour, Zapiro has a unique place in our culture and he has, once again, found plenty to cartoon about.
The chaotic GNU Dawn
The election, with what seemed like a thousand parties, was the big political story, along with Zuma stealing the ANC’s spear symbol and many of its voters.
It all led to the chaotic Government of National Unity (GNU) Dawn which became a central theme of the book. And any country where Gayton McKenzie becomes the Arts Minister and John Hlophe ends up serving on the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) which sacked him as a judge, remains ripe for my kind of satire. Internationally, it’s been Gaza, Ukraine and Trump among the big stories to cartoon.
Zapiro himself made news (and not for the first time) when the Film and Publications Board tried to slap a 16-age limit on the biographical documentary, The Showerhead. Have I Got GNUs For You is a brilliant gift for every South African …. except maybe our politicians.
About the author
Zapiro is Jonathan Shapiro. Born in 1958, he went through school in Cape Town, architecture at UCT, conscription, activism, detention and a Fulbright Scholarship to New York before establishing himself as South Africa’s best-known cartoonist.
He is the editorial cartoonist for Daily Maverick. Previously he was published in Mail & Guardian, Sowetan, Sunday Times, Independent Newspapers and The Times.
As an activist in the 1980s, he drew for the UDF and for South (1987–88). He has published 28 best-selling annuals and four special collections. He has won numerous international and South African awards and has two honorary doctorates.
