SABRIC, on behalf of the banking industry has released its annual crime stats for 2018. We are concerned about some of the increases, which clearly reflect that criminals will take every opportunity to get their hands on bank customers’ money.
2018 Cyber trends and recommendations for 2019
Cyber-attacks are increasingly becoming more and more sophisticated, and the magnitude of their impact across all industries globally is at an all-time high. A number of reports in the last two years revealed that the BRICS economies (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) were found to be amongst the largest victims of cybercrime. According to VM Advisory*, South Africa is listed as one of the ten globally most vulnerable countries to cyberattacks.

The South African Banking Risk Information Centre (SABRIC ) would like to remind bank clients to always be on the lookout for Phishing, Vishing and SMishing scams. Phishing, Vishing and SMishing are all methods of deceitfully obtaining personal information such as passwords, ID numbers and bank card details by tricking clients into believing that they are from trusted sources, such as banks or legitimate companies.
