The first part of the State Capture Commission’s report, released earlier this month, documents an account of events where many sectors and individuals colluded to create an environment in which billions could be pilfered. This was achieved by deliberately sidestepping constitutional and regulatory checks and balances.

South Africa’s current woes are in large part a result of a large-scale breakdown in ethics (both personal and professional) and good governance practices. One only needs to look at the goings-on at Steinhoff, KPMG, Eskom, SARS and VBS Bank to see the impact that unethical behaviour, large scale looting and unchecked business practices have had on the South African economy and on South Africans, whose confidence in the leadership of this country and those in business is at an all-time low.

Principles of professional conduct

The SAICA Code of Professional Conduct (the Code) has, since 2006, set out certain fundamental principles that members and associates (accountants) should adhere to. The principles are integrity, objectivity, professional competence and due care, confidentiality and professional behaviour.
