Despite meaningful progress in women’s participation in the economy, many women-led businesses across South Africa still face persistent challenges. These include limited access to markets and networks, as well as barriers to securing funding and digital tools.

As we celebrate Women’s Month in South Africa, it is essential to reflect on the incredible women who have been trailblazers in breaking barriers and attaining leadership positions across various industries. Women have defied societal norms, shattered glass ceilings, and proven time and again that they are a force to be reckoned with.

As we celebrate Women’s Month, we share our views on how far South Africa has come in transforming its patriarchal society - and what still needs to be done. If you were to review the Economic Freedom of the World Annual Report, you would note that South Africa scores 1.00 on the Gender Disparity Index, indicating that there is no legal difference in how women are treated relative to men under the law.

It’s no secret that women have had to work hard for their place in the working world and have had to overcome several obstacles over the years – not least of which has been this crazy new normal of lockdown, home-schooling, video conferencing, never-ending cycle of meetings and calls - where personal space and work-life seem to have morphed into one.

The year 2020 has brought with it disruption and upheaval of proportions never before encountered by South African business, affecting both the public and the private sector alike. This 'new normal' is necessitating a reassessment of old paradigms and a call for innovative and pioneering approaches.

Research shows that COVID-19 has caused women greater economic hardship than men. Women’s month is an opportunity to address larger societal issues such as equality, poverty and income security. Women must be financially independent to be fully empowered.

August is women’s month. So, what better time than this to release a book that, among other great stories, features several powerfully positive tales written by talented women? Hope Stories is a collection of positive tales and motivational anecdotes, serendipitously released at a time when positivity is in high demand.

Although South African women are making great strides within the workplace, corporate South Africa has more work to do to effectively transform boardrooms. The COVID-19 pandemic has further exposed deep-rooted inequalities in social, political and economic systems, and has demonstrated the importance of the unique skills that women bring to societies.

Off the back of National Savings Month – which was celebrated in July – followed by South Africa honouring its women in August as it celebrated National Women’s Month. It is fitting that these two months are celebrated after each other. South Africans hold their women in high regard as they play a vital role not only in society, but in the home.
