Chief financial officers (CFOs) know that the cloud can save them money. Yet as they pore over their income statements, many CFOs are concerned to see that their cloud costs are skyrocketing every month.

Over the past several years sustainability has become a growing priority for most, if not all, organisations. Forward-thinking businesses, consumers and governments alike are increasingly looking at how to increase their sustainability efforts, while many decisions are increasingly being made with enhancing sustainability as an important driver.

Hybrid IT and hybrid cloud are terms that we are continually confronted with. Still, when asked to explain what this translates to, there is often a pause in the room as people try and ascertain if it's hybridity or multi-cloud, which we are referring to.

While the general opinion by industry observers is that organisations will virtualise the majority of applications and workloads and move to the public cloud – with the public cloud representing up to 80% of companies' infrastructure footprints – most businesses have pivoted to a hybrid approach in response to the need for more balance.

Businesses today must be more agile, efficient and proactive than ever, a feat that can only be successfully achieved through digital technologies that deliver enhanced intelligence, including the intelligent cloud, and the ability to process and analyse data at source, also known as the intelligent edge.

Cloud adoption, including hybrid and multi-cloud adoption is expanding fast among both private and public sector organisations of all sizes. At the enterprise level, we estimate that two-thirds of companies globally already use multiple clouds.

The phrase ‘multi-cloud’ is surfacing often and for good reason: it’s part of cloud’s natural evolution. Multi-cloud is a very popular architecture among enterprises. A survey released by the IBM Institute for Business Value found that a staggering 85% of polled businesses use multi-cloud. South African businesses are already prolific adopters of cloud - at least 65% of local CIOs intend to invest in cloud during 2019 (IDC). A significant number of those deployments will be multi-cloud.
