Leaders are expected to plan for the future, whether they operate in big business, small business, government or good-deed organisations. And they do. Leaders collate data across all aspects of operations. They compare budgets with actuals. They also make projections for the next six months to five years.  Leaders build detailed quantitative models and dashboards. Some projections include both positive and negative outcomes.

Many organisations believe they have a communication problem. Teams are working in silos. Messages are being misunderstood. Decisions are not filtering through. People are not taking enough ownership. However, these challenges often signal something deeper.

In my experience, leadership has often been treated as a function of certainty. Experience is expected to provide answers. Structure is expected to deliver control. Leadership itself centres on directing, deciding and maintaining order. However, that model is under strain.

In the days following the recent World Economic Forum Annual Meeting, the distance between global decisions and local consequences feels uncomfortably short. Tariff negotiations, technology regulations and trade policy shifts made in Davos are already surfacing in South Africa. They are causing delivery delays, price volatility and financing challenges.
