Damilare Kuku’s Women Rent Men and Secrets Here offers a lively and suspenseful glimpse into the complicated social world of Lagos. The novel combines mystery, scandal and sharp social observation. It also explores how gossip can expose uncomfortable truths while creating new dangers for those involved.

At the centre of the story is Ara Ikoyi, a successful author facing a familiar creative crisis. With three bestsellers behind her, Ara desperately needs a new story. Her opportunity arrives when her neighbour, Juicy Mbelu, faces accusations of murdering her sugar daddy.

Ara immediately recognises the scandal’s potential. However, Juicy refuses to become simply another sensational story. Instead, she demands that Ara exchange secrets with the women living on their Lagos estate. She also insists that Ara tell her story truthfully.

Secrets, scandal and social power

From there, Women Rent Men and Secrets Here develops into a compelling exploration of secrecy, relationships and social judgement. As Ara uncovers the women’s hidden lives, she enters a world shaped by wealth, desire, rivalry and unequal power. Consequently, the novel moves beyond the murder accusation. It examines the personal costs of exposing private lives for public consumption.

Kuku also creates tension by placing Ara between professional ambition and moral responsibility. She wants a story that could revive her career. Yet telling Juicy’s story could destroy the very people who trust her. This conflict gives Women Rent Men and Secrets Here much of its emotional and dramatic appeal.

The book should particularly appeal to readers who enjoy contemporary African fiction with humour, mystery and social commentary. Kuku uses the Lagos setting effectively while exploring universal questions about friendship, reputation and truth. Most importantly, Women Rent Men and Secrets Here reminds readers that secrets rarely remain private when curiosity, ambition and gossip collide.
