South Africa’s inflation landscape experienced a notable shift in July 2025, with headline consumer price inflation climbing to 3.5% from 3.0% in June, marking a 10-month high since September 2024 when it reached 3.8%. This uptick represents a significant development in the country’s economic trajectory, particularly as it moves closer to the South African Reserve Bank’s inflation target range.
Food price pressures drive inflation
The July inflation surge was primarily driven by food and non-alcoholic beverage prices, which continue to exert upward pressure on household budgets.
Several food categories showed concerning price increases:
- Mixed spices: 6.2% increase
- Salad dressing: 6.7% increase
- Vinegar: 6.6% increase
- Soup powder: 5.9% increase
Hot beverages showed some relief, with inflation cooling to 8.9% in July, down from a peak of 17.5% recorded in August of the previous year.
Municipal services and utilities impact
A significant contributor to the inflation uptick came from municipal tariff adjustments implemented in July 2025. Water supply tariffs increased by a substantial 12.1%, marking the sharpest increase since 2018 when tariffs jumped by 12.9%.
Electricity prices climbed by 10.6%, though this was lower than the 11.5% recorded in 2024. These utility price increases have become a key driver of inflation in South Africa’s urban areas.
Core inflation and economic indicators
Core inflation, which excludes volatile food, fuel, and energy prices, edged up to 3.0% in July 2025 from 2.9% in June. This measure provides insight into underlying inflationary pressures beyond volatile categories.
Future outlook and policy implications
The South African Reserve Bank projects inflation will accelerate to 3.9% in the last quarter of 2025. This trajectory reflects broader economic dynamics, including global trends and domestic policy measures aimed at maintaining price stability.
External factors such as China’s deflationary exports and OPEC’s production strategies continue to influence South Africa’s inflation outlook, highlighting the interconnected nature of global economic forces.
