The ZA Domain Name Authority (ZADNA) has published draft rules aimed at further regulating the registration and operation of websites in South Africa. For local hosting companies that offer domain name registrations and registrar services, additional license conditions and fees payable via the registry may impact their ability to offer competitive pricing.

We have published the draft .za registry and registrar licensing regulations that provide details on the requirements to be met by registries and registrars to be licensed, the steps to be taken when applying for the renewal of the license, and how to address contraventions of the license conditions.

The ZA Central Registry (ZACR) NPC is aware that the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) will come into effect on 25 May 2018. In addition, there are talks that South Africa’s own Protection of Personal Information (POPI) Act 26 of 2013 may come into effect during the course of 2018.

Start-ups now have greater control over their Intellectual Property (IP). This follows ground-breaking collaboration between the Companies & Intellectual Properties Commission (CIPC), the ZA Domain Name Authority (ZADNA) and the ZA Central Registry NPC (ZACR) that makes it possible to register a new company and its equivalent co.za domain name at the same time.
