South Africa’s economy is in a mess, to say the very least, and all this is solely and exclusively the fault of policymakers. Everything has gone horribly wrong! Yet it is not all beyond redemption.

Blame "Capital Monopoly" if you must, but blame "White Monopoly Capital" at your peril. The South African Government's strategy, when dealing with the economic fallout, has been to set itself off against Business squarely, being the demon in society, while characterising Government as the White Knight out to protect society against the ravages of bad Business.

Political uncertainty globally will have ripple effects on Africa, primarily through impacts on commodity prices and global economic sentiment. While the early months of 2017 have seen improved prices for the commodities on which many southern African economies rely, longer term economic sentiment is more mixed. Meanwhile, governance improvements and the embedding of democratic practices and norms will be tested by pockets of instability as succession battles take place across the region.
