On 1 January 2021 trading under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) started. The AfCFTA, with its 35 signatories, is an instrument that legitimises the creation of a single continental market for goods and services.

This paper argues that when organisations compete in conditions of a complex economy in turmoil, quality remains an important aspect of competitiveness. The key issue still remains as to how quality management is implemented and continually organised, rather than just delving in just quality issues.
