Stories sell. They grab at us and hold our attention in ways that fact-heavy reporting does not. What’s more, the stories we in the communications industry tell often have an impact, even on ourselves, that we don’t immediately grasp.

It’s not that you don’t think having a financial adviser (FA) is important, the critical role of sound guidance has been drummed into you by your money-savvy friends since you first started earning. But perhaps you’ve put off finding someone to handle your portfolio because you’re not entirely sure what you should be looking for.

Post-COVID-19 economic resurgence saw an increase in international work opportunities. With skills in hand, many South African professionals have become sought-after in other countries. As a result, their finances and subsequent taxation have come under scrutiny. However, along with the awareness of tax complications, another threat has emerged.

In October 2020, we focused on ethics and delivered a series of webinars to discuss the ethical challenges currently facing the chartered accountancy and auditing professions and come up with solutions to these challenges. During a particular focus on ethics in the public sector, I shared that the professional body has noted an increase in the number of member complaints about intimidation threats.

The SAICA Code of Professional Conduct (the Code) has, since 2006, set out certain fundamental principles that members and associates (accountants) should adhere to. The principles are integrity, objectivity, professional competence and due care, confidentiality and professional behaviour.
