According to the latest Quarterly Labour Force Survey, just over 40 million South Africans were of working age (15-64 years old) in the first quarter of 2022. Of these, 14,914,000 had a job. This means that almost 15 million adults in this country were wage slaves; people who have no choice but to give up what they produce to someone ese just to survive.

Institutional investment is arguably a key economic driver, providing the means by which many countries can grow and develop across many different areas – in many ways it is the ‘fuel’ that powers modern economies. But, as society increasingly grapples with what a modern, inclusive, socially responsible society should look like, so many are looking to re-imagine the ingrained structures behind elements of society that need systemic change.

Tito Mboweni, South Africa's newly appointed Finance Minister, delivered his maiden Medium Term Budget Policy Statement (MTBPS) to Parliament by starting his address with the words, "South Africa finds itself at a crossroads."
