As Black Friday approaches, millions of consumers prepare for one of the busiest shopping days of the year. The excitement of discounts and limited-time deals drives online shopping. However, this also creates an opportunity for cybercriminals to exploit the surge in activity.

People with an agreeable personality have a higher chance of being manipulated by cybercriminals to share private and sensitive information. The study suggests a striking correlation between personality types and cybersecurity risk. I surveyed close to 700 people on their personality type and how likely they were to respond to different social engineering attacks - when cybercriminals trick people into giving up private information or passwords or clicking on harmful links.

Consumer concerns related to COVID-19 including fears of being infected by the coronavirus while attending to their banking matters and stress related to debt issues have come to our attention. In response to President Ramaphosa’s address on the measures to contain the spread of the coronavirus, we urge consumers to remain calm and to follow the stringent measures in place to protect both themselves and their families. 

The South African Banking Risk Information Centre (SABRIC ) would like to remind bank clients to always be on the lookout for Phishing, Vishing and SMishing scams. Phishing, Vishing and SMishing are all methods of deceitfully obtaining personal information such as passwords, ID numbers and bank card details by tricking clients into believing that they are from trusted sources, such as banks or legitimate companies.
