While meaningful progress has been made in modernising service delivery, many citizens still face long waits and paperwork when applying for essential services like Smart IDs or clinic-based healthcare. These moments present an opportunity to do more.

The South African taxi industry, a cornerstone of the nation's transport landscape, has long been under scrutiny for its apparent underpayment of taxes. However, a closer examination reveals a more complex reality. In 2021, the industry paid only R5 million in annual Corporate Income Tax (CIT). This is a small amount compared to the industry’s estimated annual revenue of R90 billion.

As you know, the threshold has increased by 7.6%. Upon investigation, it seems that the October Consumer Price Index (CPI) was used to increase the threshold. More significantly, the National Minimum Wage has gone up by 9.6% as well.

South Africa was once speculated to have a government workforce larger than that of the United States. Think about that for a second or two. A country whose population numbers close to 57 million with more civil servants than a nation of over 300 million individuals.
