Forging a ‘New Deal’ for South Africa
South Africa urgently needs a new approach to deal with dangerously high poverty, unemployment and inequality levels. President Cyril Ramaphosa, has called for a “new deal through we can build an economy that benefits all.” Key elements of such a deal may already be available in the recommendations put forward by Parliament’s High Level Panel, led by former president, Kgalema Motlanthe.
Economics wish list for SONA 2018
President Cyril Ramaphosa will deliver his maiden State of the Nation Address (SONA) on 16 February 2018. The annual speech kicks off the Parliamentary year and focuses on the country’s current political and economic situation.
Regarding the latter, South Africa experienced deteriorating economic conditions during 2014-2017, and there is great hope for an improvement in economic growth during 2018 under the new administration.
