At the beginning of every year, a barrage of trend think pieces flood our favourite news sites and inboxes, courtesy of whatever newsletter we don’t remember subscribing to – from the useful; “Three factors influencing your investments this year” to the downright absurd; “Why that cuddly kitty of yours is a killer.” And no, we didn’t make that last one up – it’s a bona fide New York Times article!

Who would have guessed that a couple of angry birds with superpowers would have gained such a cult-like following, amassing five billion downloads by 2022 (more than both Instagram and WhatsApp), spurring a movie and even a sequel, and earning fans like Angelina Jolie and David Cameron?

Gaming is growing at an incredible pace all around the world. In fact global revenue is estimated to be worth over $159 billion in 2021 with a projected compound annual growth rate of 10.5% until 2026. The forecast is even bigger for Africa as the continent plays catch up with the rest of the world.

Mobile gaming has come into its own over the past few years. Analysts say the gaming industry generated $85 billion in value in 2020, while an estimated 2.5 billion people play games on mobile devices. Advances in technology also mean mobile games are increasingly able to compete with the visual fidelity of their console and PC cousins.

As we tackle new COVID-19 variants and witness increasing levels of lockdown still unfolding around the world, the promise of a vaccine has not yet dulled the relentless and destructive march of the Coronavirus, upending many industries.
