For decades, the global educational discourse has focused on the “leak”. It examines the rate at which students drop out of formal schooling. It also tracks those who exit without skills for the modern workforce. In South Africa, systemic inequality still shows in thousands of classrooms. Billions of Rands have gone into improving matric pass rates. Additional funds have supported tertiary infrastructure upgrades. Yet outcomes remain stubbornly stagnant.

Literacy remains a critical area of progress and concern across Africa. The continent has seen significant gains in literacy over the past two decades, yet much still needs to be done.
