In an article we wrote in July 2025, we highlighted key issues relating to the Employment Equity Amendment Bill. People commonly refer to this legislation as the Fair Pay Bill, which Build One South Africa (BOSA) proposed. On 30 April 2026, a Notice confirmed BOSA’s intention to introduce an updated version of the Bill in the National Assembly.

Cabinet announced on 28 May 2025 that it has approved both the National Labour Migration Policy (NLMP) 2025 White Paper and the Employment Services Amendment Bill, 2021 (ESAB). These will now proceed to implementation and submission to Parliament.

The Department of Employment and Labour (DEL) has recently stepped up its inspection raids. These actions have attracted significant media attention. Most notably, these inspections have been prominent in the hospitality industry. As a result of these inspections, approximately 80 people working in restaurants across the country have been arrested.

With the ravages of COVID-19 since early 2020, has come a rise in employees in full time employment taking on a ‘side hustle’ to supplement income. Further to this, remote working provides employees with a great opportunity to engage in secondary jobs, especially where once being at the office may have been a hindrance.

After much anticipation and a period of almost seven years it has been officially announced that the core sections of the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) commenced on 1 July 2020 and on 30 June 2021. These core sections took effect on 1 July 2020 and organisations will be allowed twelve months to 30 June 2021 to become compliant with the Act.
