The World Economic Forum predicts that nearly 40% of on-the-job skills will change by 2030. The capabilities gaining ground are not just technical. Creative thinking, resilience and analytical thinking are also rising alongside Artificial Intelligence (AI) and big data. In addition, the tasks least likely to be automated require human judgment, the ability to sit with complexity and the capacity to understand people well enough to solve the right problem.

In the days following the recent World Economic Forum Annual Meeting, the distance between global decisions and local consequences feels uncomfortably short. Tariff negotiations, technology regulations and trade policy shifts made in Davos are already surfacing in South Africa. They are causing delivery delays, price volatility and financing challenges.

South Africa is transitioning from fossil fuels toward renewable energy. The government aims to add at least 19 GW of renewable capacity by 2030. By 2050, the country targets as much as 190 GW. These targets are critical for climate resilience and energy security. Yet, the social design of this transition is dangerously overlooked.
