Education crisis – are we preparing students for the wrong future?
During my time working at South African Breweries (SAB), I watched young graduates arrive on the factory floor holding hard-earned chemistry degrees. They possessed brilliant theoretical minds. They understood molecular bonds and complex reactions on paper. Yet, when a critical machine on the production line broke down, those degrees often could not get the line moving again.
The education landscape is at crossroads
South Africa’s education system stands at a crossroads. With more than 24,850 schools serving millions of learners, the scale of the sector is undeniable. However, beneath these numbers lies a persistent struggle. High dropout rates continue to rise. Learning deficits remain severe. Deep inequalities still shape the nation’s future and define the education landscape.
