Bank deposit insurance exacerbates the very crises it is assumed to alleviate. It inevitably promotes its own expansion and perforce brings calls for yet heavier regulation.

All taxes are wealth taxes. All taxes imply the transfer of wealth from the individual owner to a government agency. The only difference between taxes is the tax base or event upon which the tax is levied, and the difference between the total burden borne by the taxpayers and the amount of revenue actually received by the government.

Some societies are better able than others to withstand adverse weather events such as droughts and storms, and even earthquakes, with fewer deaths and less economic and social disruption. Such societies also seem to have less crime, greater social cohesion, and greater economic optimism.

When you drop a rubber ball on the pavement, no one should really be surprised when the ball bounces back toward your hand. No one would ascribe it to your superpowers, your powers of levitation. You might have to lower your hand slightly to catch it, but it will return much of the way.
