The African diaspora is one of the fastest-growing communities in the world. The United Nations estimates that more than 170 million people of African descent live outside the continent. Among them is me, a South African living in the Netherlands. My personal journey reflects how diaspora identities continually reshape the way brands are perceived across continents.

The book tells the unknown stories of the innovation and ingenuity of Africans who are solving African problems for African people. These stories include heart-rending accounts of African American inventors at the turn of the 20th century who struggled to have their inventions recognised under relentless racism, and, in the modern era, inventors from the African continent who found inspiration and answers to issues faced every day that are particular to their situations.

The integration of finance and technology, known as fintech, has revolutionised traditional banking and payment systems, transforming how we live, work and travel. Similarly, travel technology, or traveltech, has empowered travellers with convenient booking platforms and personalised experiences.

In 1909, four women board a ship in Madras to cross the Kala Pani, the ‘black water’, to Natal. On board the ship, the women will form friendships and alliances. They will help each other through trial and trauma, even after they arrive and are separated.
