After demonstrating significant progress in strengthening the effectiveness of its anti-money-laundering (AML) and counter-financing of terrorism (CFT) measures, South Africa was recently removed from the Financial Action Task Force’s (FATF) grey list.

Most mid-sized to large organisations in South Africa have made significant investments in IP-based surveillance systems, with a heavy focus on detecting and preventing crime. From warehouses, factory floors and offices to shops and parking lots, organisations have blanketed their properties with digital cameras for security reasons.

In a recent newsletter, President Cyril Ramaphosa said that South Africa knows what needs to be done to be removed from the greylist and that the fundamentals are in place. Eight areas of strategic deficiency have been identified by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) which government needs to urgently address in order to get off the greylist.
