Fifty-two percent of CEOs across Sub-Saharan Africa expect economic growth locally and in their Africa territory (compared to 44% globally) in the next 12 months. At the same time, 50% of these CEOs are feeling more exposed to inflation and macroeconomic volatility (40%).

New year, new you. You’ve probably already heard this countless times but its safe to say that you’ll hear it a whole lot more as you make your way through the five weeks of January. What this actually means for each individual is obviously very different. For some, its gaining financial freedom, achieving a health goal or learning a new skill. For others, it’s fulfilling a professional dream – like owning your own business.

What’s the next black swan likely to be? A black swan is a potentially dire unexpected event – the pandemic being a perfect example. An Eskom grid failure could be next. Or another devastating drought? A massive cyber-attack? 

According to a recent National Small Business Chamber (NSBC) poll, 86% of small businesses in South Africa said they had suffered negative effects as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic. And as the economy gradually begins to open up again, every small business owner will be looking critically at their business and creating a business continuity plan.
