We have shared new research findings on how to achieve responsible entrepreneurship in South Africa. This work strengthens national conversations on achieving responsible entrepreneurship at a time when sustainability sits at the centre of global economic priorities.

Aspiring entrepreneurs from all backgrounds can start businesses if they cultivate 14 entrepreneurial competencies (ECs). Teaching entrepreneurship differently becomes essential because the study argues that traditional methods no longer match South Africa’s diverse learning needs. This is the key finding of a seven-year joint academic study.

We are working towards developing a new breed of entrepreneurs, one that’s future fit, disruptive, and geared to solving the challenges of an increasingly complex world. As South Africa considers the challenges and opportunities facing our youth, there has never been a greater need for inclusive entrepreneurship.

The latest research has demonstrated what we always known: Entrepreneurship can be taught, selected for and measured. A study has identified the indicators which predict high-impact entrepreneurial activity in the start-up sector. The study was carried out with 1,200 start-up and established entrepreneurs.

The only constant in a tech-driven world is change. Rapid advances in technology are driving change in the workplace. To remain competitive, businesses are having to implement new strategies that include technology, upskilling their workforce, employing agile leaders and promoting a culture of lifelong learning among managers and other employees.

Only 15% of South African start-ups are successful, despite South Africa having the 2nd highest ranking on the continent according to the 2018 Global Entrepreneurship Index.

South Africa’s approach to entrepreneurship needs to undergo a paradigm shift and developing the right mindset among young would-be entrepreneurs in particular is the starting point.
