BOOK REVIEW | Lead With Intent

Leadership principles and practices that drive engagement and profitability

By Hermann du Plessis

Research provides convincing evidence that only fully engaged people deliver outstanding results on a sustainable basis.

Lead With Intent is a profound yet easy read that reveals 9 leadership principles and practices that drive engagement in the workplace. The impact of these leadership principles is a business culture that unleashes and grows the potential in any organisation.

Engagement and performance

When a leader follows these principles and practices intentionally, engagement is raised which drives performance and serves all stakeholders.

Fully engaged people accept responsibility as they feel that they belong, are respected, trusted and appreciated. Globally, Servant Leadership is misrepresented by well-meaning consulting firms and consequently, many misconceptions are still doing the rounds. In my 16 years of guiding leaders, I have never met a leader that excels in relationships and results who does not subscribe to the concept of Servant Leadership. They may not realise it at first but, as we discuss the theory of Servant Leadership, they always identify with it strongly.

– Hermann du Plessis, Author

Servant Leaders believe they have a responsibility towards their people to lead with great care and awareness of the privilege inherent in this role.

Drawing from Du Plessis’ corporate experience as well as his in-depth knowledge of leadership literature, the book unpacks 9 leadership principles and practices that assist leaders in all business environments to drive engagement. These principles are rooted in Servant Leadership which is not a soft and fluffy approach where leaders fear being taken advantage of or having the responsibility of becoming their employees’ psychologist, counsellor or even slave.

On the contrary, it is an intentional approach by leaders that creates a culture where employees begin to volunteer their intelligence, energy, loyalty and contribution.

Intentional leaders refuse to serve a system that reduces human beings to mere objects of profit generation. Apart from Du Plessis implementing these practical principles successfully alongside the executives in corporates and SMEs that have seen their profitability double in three years, a division in a significant financial institution operating in 19 countries has seen a 93% customer satisfaction rating and a 97% engagement rating.

Lead With Intent is a must-read for anyone interested in becoming a more authentic and effective leader wherever they may be in life. Readers will learn how 9 leadership principles and practices can future proof their organisations and their careers, by creating an environment where people are inspired, fully engaged and motivated. It offers real life examples of how these principles are applied and what the impact on the organisation is.

If you lead with intent, you have a deep belief that it is possible to provide and produce more, while not falling victim to the system of more. It is possible to have a team that provides better results for shareholders and customers while celebrating their success and enjoying their work in a culture where they feel valued as human beings.
