Spud: Two for the Road brings readers back to the much-loved world of John van de Ruit’s Spud Milton.

Spud: Two for the Road thrives on this combination of friendship and absurdity. Spud’s narration gives the story an entertaining perspective on the disasters unfolding around him. His description of the trip as the “Year of the Icarus” also hints at the danger ahead. The promise of an all-expenses-paid holiday, however, proves difficult to resist.

The novel should appeal to existing fans of the Spud series. It also offers new readers an entertaining introduction to Spud’s adult adventures. Van de Ruit balances humour with the emotional complications of friendships, family and growing older.

About the author

John van de Ruit was born in Durban, South Africa. He studied at Michaelhouse and the University of KwaZulu-Natal, where he completed a Master’s degree in drama and performance studies.

His career as an actor, playwright and author spans more than 25 years. In 2005, his debut novel, Spud, became an immediate bestseller. The book reached readers in numerous countries and later became a successful film starring John Cleese and Troye Sivan.

The original novel inspired three sequels: The Madness Continues…, Learning to Fly and Exit, Pursued by a Bear. Van de Ruit later returned to the beloved character with Spud – The Reunion. Spud: Two for the Road continues the character’s story as he navigates adulthood, friendship and new adventures.
